As most of the groups tending the York House Community Gardens were no longer allowed to meet at York House we asked the Trustees if we could grow vegetables there for the nearest Food Bank that delivers fresh vegetables to those in need – and there was an enthusiastic response from the trustees and from the Kings Food Bank. Maintaining social distancing, we arranged a rota for watering the beds and the polytunnel, and started weeding and digging ready to plant. SSIB volunteers and allotment holders from the London Rd Allotments donated a wide variety of seeds and seedlings – and to our delight the community gardens and polytunnel are now flourishing with vegetables and fruit.

Kate Shaw and her three girls have not only tended the Yo YOs bed, but also have helped with the weeding , digging, planting and harvesting of all the beds. Andy from the Kings Food Bank has come to pick up a bonanza of fruit and veg for the last three weeks – and now we can offer lettuce, spinach, rhubarb, strawberries, squash, potatoes, radishes, tomatoes and herbs. And there are lots more to come!
