Changeover of the Planters

Though SSIB was aware that the absence of a watering contract meant the scheme for the summer planters had to be more limited than usual, we wanted to make sure that there were definitely flowers blooming in the planters to lift the spirits in the town. Pat Kyd and I suggested to the Town Clerk that if we went for drought-resistant plants, did not include hanging baskets or the Wolverton Rd Roundabout, then SSIB volunteers would be able to manage the responsibility for watering during the summer. The Town Council was delighted with our suggestion, and Pat immediately drew up a scheme for red, pink and white geraniums – and Preston Bissett Nursery delivered them to her garden. Observing social distancing, we then organised the changeover over several days, with a few SSIB volunteers involved at a time. Faced with the issue of the tree-planters lacking baskets Zena came up with the excellent idea of bunting, and David Odell supplied it and Susan and Zena put it up!

We’ve been delighted to find that Stony residents who have not previously been part of the SSIB volunteer group, have come forward to join the regular SSIB volunteers in the watering rota for the planters. We’ve also been delighted to welcome new volunteers to the team during this time – Clare George, Eillien Gallagher,Teresa Gallagher and Kate Shaw and her family - and they’ve already made a fantastic contribution to Stony in Bloom.
