Once again the Greek Church offered SSIB its attractive Swinfen Harris Hall for our End of Year Party for volunteers and sponsors in September. SSIB volunteers provided the refreshments, and this year there was certainly much to celebrate, with the Regional Britain in Bloom Gold award, the ‘Outstanding’ assessments for the 2 It’s Your Neighbourhood Groups (Mary Robinson and Robin Nichol’s North End Pond Project and York House Community Gardens); the special honour for Mary and Robin of the RHS Certificate of Distinction; and for the pupils of St Mary and St Giles, a highly commended certificate. It was an occasion for thanking all our sponsors for their support, the volunteers for their hard work – both in gardening and in other things they do for SSIB – and also for thanking Alan Box, who has had the watering contract this year, and worked way beyond the call of duty to keep the baskets and planters looking lovely despite the drought conditions. And finally, we were all raising a toast to 10 Years of Stony in Bloom!
