Last year we had the Queen’s 90th Birthday to celebrate with flowers – this year it was 50 Years of Milton Keynes!
With funding from the MK Community Foundation we bought 25 hanging baskets, 23 pots, and a massive quantity of golden marigolds and trailing blue lobelia for a planting workshop at the Stony Stratford Big Lunch on June 4th, and the same for the Fullers Slade Fun Day on June 24th.
The children were as enthusiastic as ever, many of them remembering they’d enjoyed the planting experience last year; and they relished the opportunity to get stuck into the compost, trowel it into their pot or basket, carefully place the plants in the container and proudly carry their plant-pots away. This year’s RHS theme is ‘Greening Grey Britain for Wildlife’, so the children who planted up their pots and baskets at both events will not only be part of Milton Keynes’ year of celebration, but they’ll be helping to attract bees and insects with their golden flowers, and making the area more beautiful.
Funding for the Fullers Slade planting workshop came from the Regeneration Fund, and B&Q gave us a special deal on the plants, compost, pots and baskets for both workshops as they were community events.
