Summer to Winter Changeover 2016

This year the Summer to Winter changeover came in several stages. Firstly, the taking down of the baskets by the Business Association and Christmas Lights team, and delivery to the nursery for their winter hibernation. Then came the potting up of the plants that we’d saved from last winter, and also the preparation of the winter baskets, which had been stored at the school. To our delight the eunymous and ivy from last year were still flourishing in these baskets, so all we needed to do was to re-fill with new compost and add the violas and polyanthus. Pat Kyd and Mary Sarre had an immense task in preparation for the changeover – ordering and sorting what needed to be bought fresh (the violas and polyanthus and some replacement shrubs) and working out the plans for the two days - October 15th (the emptying of the planters) and Oct 16th (the replanting).

As always, there was a great turn-out of volunteers on both days, and the work was done remarkably quickly. In the following week Ray Cobley and Len Mason put up the winter planters, watered all the plants in, gave the bowser a once over, and took it to its place of winter storage.

Stony in Bloom is committed to the principle of sustainability not only in the re-using of shrubs, storing them over the summer in the York House Community Bed, but also through having a give-away table on the High St for the summer pelargoniums that had been taken out of the planters. Many passers-by who availed themselves of these showed their appreciation by giving SSIB a donation as well. All such donations help SSIB to enhance the town by maintaining the perennial beds around the town.
