The first of the two Big Lunches in Stony Stratford was in the Wolverton Rd Recreation Ground on July 5th. The sun shone and everyone had a great time. With a Queen’s Birthday theme in mind, Stony in Bloom decided to organise a red, white and blue hanging basket workshop for children, and was awarded a Milton Keynes Community Foundation grant to pay for baskets, pots, red, white and blue plants and compost. B and Q supplied these in an excellent deal. In addition, SSIB volunteers donated strawberry plants for those who wanted to grow something that would allow them to enjoy the fruits of their labours in a more immediate way! As the pictures show, all the children enjoyed the activity, and by the end of the afternoon all the baskets and pots had been filled and proudly taken away, with the children promising to water them and help make the town beautiful. And all the strawberry plants had been planted.

The new Fullers Slade Residents Association organised the Big Lunch in Fullers Slade the following Saturday, and this too was a huge success, with sun shining and families thoroughly enjoying all the activities that had been laid on. Here too SSIB volunteers came along to provide a Queen’s Birthday hanging baskets/pots workshop activity, and there was a constant buzz as children flocked to plant up the red, white and blue plants. The MK Regeneration Fund paid for baskets and plants etc for this activity. It was lovely to see the pride on the children’s faces as they took their baskets and pots away, playing their part in celebrating the Queen’s 90th year, and at the same time helping to make Fullers Slade more colourful.
